Community Service-Learning (CSL) at the University of Alberta is happy to provide 2012’s Spring Immersion Course ‘Oil and Democracy’. This course, open to undergraduate and graduate students, aims to explore the relationship between oil production and democratic governance in Alberta and around the world.

This course will also include guest lectures and a public lecture series featuring expert speakers on themes relevant to the course. Topics may include: human rights and environmental policy, the politics of ‘ethical oil’, Aboriginal perspectives on democracy, migrant workers, citizenship, and implications of public-private restructuring for democracy.

Dr.Meenal Shrivastava and Dr.Lorna Stefanick are Associate Professors at Athabasca University and will be instructing the course. Dr. Shrivastava is also an adjunct professor in U of A’s political science department, her research interests include various aspects and agents of globalization as seen through the lenses of International Political Economy and the emerging field of Global Studies.
