The last competition for the Vikings before traveling to Nationals took place this last weekend in Tawatinaw, an hour north of St. Albert.  These sprint events match athletes in head-to-head competition in a series of heats on a 1km course ending in the crowning of the fastest sprinter.  The Vikings again showed that they are among the best in Alberta with Sarah Stephen placing 2nd in the senior women’s category and Sarah Murray in the junior women’s winning the ‘B’ final.  Tamara Taerum placed third in the ‘B’ final.  Nils Lokken placed second in the ‘B’ final after fighting hard in the ‘A’ final to be narrowly ousted at the finish line.  Sam Lindsey was also in the mix.

For the second day of competitions we changed venue and moved down Highway 2 to Athabasca.  The weather played havoc with the races on Sunday with a low of -34 C. in the morning hours sidelining a number of the Vikings who have difficulties competing in extremely cold temperatures.  Nils Lokken braved the weather and finished 1st in the senior men’s event continuing his excellent season.  Kyle Schrama had a great race finishing 4th with David Birkigt making a good showing in 5th place after a season plagued by sickness.  Sarah Stephen also braved the elements and finished the 13.5km event with a 5th place finish.

Kai Skinstad stayed in Camrose to compete in the Western Canadian Biathlon Championships placing third in both events held at the Biathlon venue.

The team is leaving for Callahan Valley on March 14 with the following student-athletes traveling to the Canadian Colleges and University Nordic Championships:  Sam Lindsey, Nils Lokken, Adam Doogan-Smith, Kyle Schrama, Jon Skinstad, and Kai Skinstad.  Wish them well as they travel to this prestigious competition.
