This past weekend, the Augustana Vikings volleyball teams traveled to Three Hills to play in the Western Canadian Open Championships. Both Vikings teams were looking to rebound from disappointing results in the league championships. On the women’s side, the Vikings opened up with a game against the Red River Rebels (Mb). The Vikings came out on top with a 25-12, 22-25, 15-7 win. Next up were their perennial playoff opponents the Ambrose Lions. Once again, the Vikings won 25-22 and 25-21. On Saturday, the Vikings played the Kelsey Amaruks (Sk), and dropped the 2-1 decision (21-25, 25-17, 7-15) to the team that would finish first in their pool. Last up were the Prairie Pilots, and the Vikings came out on top 25-18 and 25-19. This put the Vikings 2nd in their pool, and they ended up in a cross-over match against 3rd in the other pool, the CMU Blazers (Mb), a team that is currently in first place (7-0) in the CPAC (Manitoba version of the ACAL). After the Vikings took game one 25-15, the Blazers regrouped to take the next two 25-19 and 15-7 to knock the Vikings out of the playoffs. The Vikings finished in 5th place out of the 10-team tournament, and to put the quality of play into perspective, this year’s league champions (Olds) finished last in their pool to finish out of the medal round. Jessica Steil was named to the All Tournament Team.
