"Clean Sweep"

This past weekend, your Vikings women’s basketball team swept the NAIT Ooks, who are led by alumni/coach Curtis Nelson. In the odd Thursday game, the Vikings stayed tough through a Rocky-type battle, complete with two broken noses and a couple of takedowns. Led by the Jessica-less Spinder household, the Vikings held off the Ooks to pull off a 77 – 70 win.

Jamie Sparrow had her usual, second semester stellar output with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists, while her factory teammate Karla put up 15 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Stepping up to help the always feisty Spinder Factory, Jessie Hammeister-Ries chipped in 7 points, while sophomore sensation Avalon Greaves added 8 points and 4 rebounds.

The Saturday rematch at home was another tough affair, but the Vikings again battled adversity to come out with an 80 – 76 win. This time, Jamie Spinder’s output of 21 points and 6 rebounds were closely matched by Jessie “Hammer” Hammiester-Ries’ 13 points and 6 rebounds. The Vikings shot well from the floor, and harassed the Ooks into only a 30% output while out-rebounding them. First-year, Sam Janzen nearly fell right out of her chair at the Vikings stellar defence, and transfer Natasha Nagy not only chipped in 5 points, but was quoted as noting that ‘rebounding really DOES win games!’ afterward.

Words to the wise: this week, come out and support your Vikings on Saturday in a rematch against Tash’s old team, the Rustler’s of Lakeland. Game starts at 5 pm. See you there!
