The Vikings Cross-Country Ski Team recently returned from the Canadian Colleges and University Championships at the 2010 Olympic venue in Whistler, BC and a great week it was! The CCUNC is in combination with the National Championships. This year, due to the location of the event, 16 countries were represented with 750 competitors in the different age categories. Conditions were very difficult with new snow everyday. In fact in the ten days we were gone, we saw the sun for only an hour. This created challenges for the coaching staff as far as determining the best wax for the day, resulting in the use of no-wax skis in the long distance race.

Sam Lindsey and Nils Lokken led the charge with a bronze medal on the first day of competition narrowly missing the gold by 1.4 seconds in a nail-biting finish. Adam Doogan-Smith and Kyle Schrama finished 12th in this same race with Adam having the 4th best time of the day. This set the tone for a very successful week of competitions.

The next event was the 10 km classic with Sam finishing 5th , Nils 10th, Adam 27th and Kai 31st. This was a challenging day, but the Vikings showed that they could deal with adversity and finished well in the university category.

In the 15 km Free technique race, Sam was 8th, Nils 11th, Adam 17th, Kai 23rd and Kyle 29th. Sam and Kai have never raced at Nationals previously and gained some valuable experience that will serve them well at next year’s events to be held in Duntroon, Ontario.
