The first Chester Ronning Centre Distinguished Visiting Fellow, Dr. Roger Hutchinson, is in our neck of the woods throughout September. A respected ethical thinker, Dr. Hutchinson honored the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus with a lecture on September 8th

This fellowship is a return home for Dr. Hutchinson, who attended school in New Norway and earned his first degree from the University of Alberta in 1958. He went on to earn graduate degrees from the University of Chicago and the University of Toronto. In 2007, Dr. Hutchinson was presented an Honorary Doctor of Divinity from the University of Victoria.

In the Faith and Life Chapel, Hutchinson lectured to an engaged audience on “Doing Ethics in a Pluralistic World”—the title refers to a festschrift published in his honor. The lecture on pluralism centered on the metaphors of swathing and plowing. Dr. Hutchinson skillfully incorporated Augustana’s theme, From Field to Fork, as he explored the important distinction between multiculturalism and pluralism and the relevance of pluralism to modern Canadian society.

The Director of the Chester Ronning Centre for the Study of Religion and Public Life, David Goa, appreciates Dr. Hutchinson’s work on ethics, “Roger has always impressed me as being able to pull two ideas together.”

The purpose of Dr. Hutchinson’s work in ethical thought is, in his own words, “to promote conversations among different participants” in an effort to establish respect for diversity.

Dr. Hutchinson is a talented scholar with several publications under his belt, and the Chester Ronning Centre is fortunate to have him as their first Distinguished Visiting Fellow.

The Augustana community will continue to benefit from Dr. Hutchinson’s presence in Camrose, as his series of lectures will bring him back to campus throughout September.

His next lecture on Augustana Campus is scheduled for Monday, September 15 at 7:00 p.m. For the complete listings of Dr. Hutchinson’s lectures and forums, please visit www.augustana.ualberta.ca/ronning.
