The University of Alberta’s Augustana Choir will be featured at the Alberta Music Conference in Red Deer on Friday, October 31st, 2008. As the choir heads to Red Deer to take part in the conference, their director, Dr. Ardelle Ries said, “One of the responsibilities of the Augustana Choir is to act as a flagship for our campus.”
The Augustana choir will participate in a choral showcase concert in addition to serving as a demo choir for a choral workshop. By playing roles in the conference, Dr. Ries said the choir is “conveying to music educators in the conference that we are actively involved in the promotion of choral music education in the province of Alberta.”
The Augustana Choir has also featured prominently in past performances. Its most recent performance was in May 2008 in Italy, where it gave fine performances that were well received. “We were warmly received by all audiences in Venice, Florence, and Rome. The Italian Choirs that we shared concerts with were deeply impressed by our sound, choice of repertoire, and musical delivery,” said Dr Ries.
The Alberta Music Conference is held annually to provide an avenue for youth and professionals across Alberta to develop and promote their talents in choral and band music. In addition to concerts, delegates to the conference attend master classes, sessions and workshop on topics related to music education. Other activities in the conference include an industry trade fair, which provides an opportunity to buy musical instruments, choral scores, and to become acquainted with institutions and businesses that support music in Alberta.
Music Conference Alberta is a cooperative endeavour between the Alberta Choral Federation, the Alberta Band Association, the Alberta Music Educators’ Foundation, the Alberta Kodaly Association and the Alberta Guild of English Handbell Ringers.
Teachers and conductors from across the province are allowed to recommend best singers and instrumentalists among their choir members to participate in honour ensembles. Eight members of the Augustana Choir have been chosen to participate in the Alberta Youth Choir under a guest conductor, Dr. Adam Con. They include Russell Ault- tenor, Halley Bailey –alto, Morgan Martin – alto, Mairi Irene McCormack – soprano, Carmelle Mohr – soprano, Nicholas Sommer – tenor, Garret Thorson – bass and Sheldon Weber – bass.
