Augustana will once again be partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society to raise awareness in the fight against cancer

The 2008-2009 “Hoops For Hope” campaign is ready to begin and Vikings men’s basketball coach Dave Drabiuk is excited at the prospect. Augustana will once again be partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society, through the assistance of Tricia Dey-Twomey to raise awareness (and, hopefully, money) in the fight against cancer.

The Vikings’ “Hoops For Hope” campaign is a personal one for many players. It is conducted in the memory of Brett Binder, an Augustana student-athlete whose courageous battle with Leukemia ended in December of 2007.

This season the public will be asked to sponsor either the men’s basketball team or the women’s basketball team (or both teams) based on the number of successful free throw attempts over the course of the 24-game regular season. The season begins on Friday, October 10th, 2008 and runs through to February 14th, 2009.

“Anyone can join in at any point during the season,” says Drabiuk. “We are asking people to support us for the total number we will achieve by the end of our last regular season game on February 14th, 2009. Pledges could range from the classic “penny-a-point” to the much bolder “buck-a-basket” variety and anywhere in between.

Last season the men made 391 free throws in 24 league games; the women’s team made 354. The total number of made free throws will be posted in the gym and the game-by-game statistics are available through the Augustana athletics webpage and through the Alberta Colleges Athletic Association website.

Last year’s campaign raised a little over $16, 000 for the Canadian Cancer Society through the efforts of Augustana student Jessica Forgeron, which resulted in Jessica and Drabiuk shaving their heads for the cause. Drabiuk promises that he will go through with the head shave again if the campaign reaches $10, 000 with the new format. To help that along, they are still looking for a corporate supporter willing to pledge on a matching basis and/or help to sponsor the campaign.

For more information and to pick up a pledge form please contact Dave Drabiuk at the Augustana Campus: 780.679.1168 or, or you can drop by the Camrose office of the Canadian Cancer Society located at 4909-48 Street.
