The Augustana cross country running team traveled to Grande Prairie to compete in the ACAC championships on Saturday. The competition brought out the best in the Vikings, as all runners came up big and performed their top race of the season. As a result of such efforts, both men and women were second in the event. The women finished agonizingly close to Red Deer College in the competition, last year’s National Champions. Only two points separated Augustana from the first place Queens. Kathryn Stone ran an exceptional race to place third (20:53), only a few seconds out of second. On the men’s side, all six scoring runners placed in the top 20. Despite the great finish from the men, Lethbridge College still prevailed over the Vikings. David Arial ran under 28 minutes for the first time in his career and was only seconds out of the medals. Joe Nusse also ran a strong race to place fifth. Kathryn Stone, David Arial, and Joe Nusse were Vikings runners who made the ACAC conference team at nationals. Phil Eriksson and Patricia Leighton missed out on the conference team by only one spot. Next up for the Vikings will be CCAA nationals in Kingston, Ontario on November 7th and 8th. Good luck to all competitors and coaches.
