Each year, one new Augustana student receives the Dean’s Citation Entrance award. This year’s recipient is Sabrina Phippen of Pigeon Lake. Dean Roger Epp visited Sabrina at her high school in June, and he thinks that “she’ll be not only a great student but someone who will really be involved here in all kinds of ways.”

The award is part of the Scholastic Distinction Scholarship Program, and it is the highest-ranking Augustana-specific scholarship. Selection is based on grade 10, 11, and 12 averages, as well as an academic reference and an essay. Recipients can continue to receive the scholarship for four years at Augustana.

Sabrina went to Pigeon Lake Regional School and was the valedictorian of her graduating class. In addition to being academically successful during high school, Sabrina was active in her school’s community. She played volleyball and badminton, and she and her partner won silver in badminton zones last year. Although Sabrina decided not to try out for any sports teams in her first year at Augustana, she plans to get involved in other ways, through clubs and campus events.

Sabrina is a biology major, and she is enjoying her courses so far. Although she is unsure of specific career goals, she does know what her interests are. “I would like to get into an environmental/biological field,” stated Sabrina. She enjoys nature, including the “bugs, frogs, toads, and all the creepy-crawleys that [she] grew up with at home.” She is also interested in photography.

Sabrina was originally considering the University of Alberta’s north campus, but she decided on Augustana because of its more intimate learning environment. Additionally, she said, “it fits what I want to do, and I can take all four years here.”

As for campus life, Sabrina is thoroughly enjoying living in the First Year Dorms. “The cafeteria is awesome,” she said. She also appreciates the short walking distance to all of her classes. Sabrina is getting to know other students in her classes and in the dorms, and she looks forward to her years at Augustana.
