The Vikings biathlon team descended on Hay River, NWT, from November 7th to 14th for a fantastic snow camp. While the 12 hour drive lacked excitement, the good foot and a half of snow blanketing the northern trails heartened the entire team. The week was filled with many long hours of excellent skiing, time trials, games and balance drills. The team also held a ski movement day and an evening of super sprints with the Hay River Nordic Ski Club. Both a sprint race and an individual time trial were held, with all athletes gaining more experience and some acheieving personal bests.

The team enjoyed the balmy weather, frequent snow storms and several meals from generous northern citizens, including a veritable feast provided by the entire Mawdsley family. Other highlights included quality team bonding time with nonsensical “murder-in-the-dark” games, early morning jogs, and copious amounts of jello. Snow Camp was finished with a fantastic talent show including a Stan Rogers cover, magic tricks, singing chins, and an amazing rendition of “Classical Gas.”

The biathletes now gear up for the first competitions of the year. Two races will be held in Canmore this weekend on a small loop of
machine made snow.
