The Vikings hockey team made the trek to Lac La Biche on Friday night for a tilt with the Portage Voyageurs in a "Battle of the Original Explorers."  The Vikings put together a very solid 60 minute effort in winning for the second straight game and gaining their fifth of the last six possible points in the extremely competitive ACAC men’s hockey league.

Ben Starbuck was one of many heroes for the Vikes, as he scored three first period goals to help skate the men’s squad to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes. First-year leader Casey Rempel chipped in a big goal to round out the scoring in the first frame.

After the intermission, Portage came out hard to gain some momentum and were rewarded with a power play goal to cut the Vikings lead to three.  Shortly afterwards, the Voyageurs capitalized on a rare Vikings turnover and quickly the score was 4-2.  Following a Vikings timeout to refocus, the boys from Augustana responded with two quick goals by assistant captains Richard Dupre and Tyler Bellamy.  The Viking leaders righted the ship and helped restore their four goal lead heading into the third period.
In the final frame, the Vikings were determined to finish off their hosts and pick up the valuable road points.  Veteran forward Aaron Hareuther cashed in on a Viking power play to close out the scoring.  Hareuther’s tally made the final score 7-2 for the Vikings!  Colin Stebner was stellar in goal for the win and the coaching staff was extremely pleased with the entire lineup in the road victory.

Next action for the hockey squad will be this coming weekend when they host the Briercrest College Clippers in a pair of games at the beautiful Encana Arena.  Game time on Friday, November 14th is at 7:30 p.m. and the puck drops for the game on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.   The Vikings will be looking to make it a long trip home for the boys from Caronport, Saskatchewan.  See you at the rink!
