On Friday, the Augustana men’s basketball team played host to the NAIT Ooks. The Vikings treated the crowd to an exciting basketball game that featured a number of lead changes and some impressive individual and team skills. The first half was a fierce battle that ended in a 33-33 stalemate. Augustana jumped out to a 53-48 lead at the end of the third and as the teams headed into the fourth quarter, the crowd was loud and energized by the great play of both teams. NAIT’s key guard Klaus Figueiredo was held to a mere eight points to go along with four turnovers as the Augustana defense locked in on him all night long. The fourth quarter saw heroic efforts from players from both teams as NAIT’s guards barraged the net with three-point bombs and the Augustana running game pounded on the NAIT defense like the ceaseless tides on the forgotten shores of victory island. In the end, the Ooks feathered their nest with yet another win, edging the Augustana men by a score of 76-72 thanks to a late three -pointer. ID apparel player of the game Mike McCorquindale had 20 points along with seven rebounds and three assists in his return from injury. Freshman Alex Butts had 11 rebounds to be the high rebounder of the game and guards David Ness (13 points) and Brendin Huculak (11 points) were the other Augustana players in double digits.
Saturday’s rematch in Edmonton saw the Augustana men jump out to an early eight point lead. NAIT fought back on their home floor to reclaim a two point lead into the halftime break. The scenario played out the same as Friday night, with both teams taking a turn at trying to hold the lead and exchanging scoring runs. The Augustana men shot a blistering 83 percent from the free throw line and McCorquindale kept his scoring touch as he chipped in 15 points and two assists. Player of the game David Ness had 15 points as well, also adding eight assists and five rebounds. Guard Kevin Barnes had 13 points and four assists. Guard Brendin Huculak led the Augustana glass attack with eight rebounds to go with his seven points and six assists. NAIT edged out the Vikings in the third and fourth quarters 24-22, capping another thrilling ACAC tilt 86-80.
The Augustana men’s basketball team travels to Lakeland College on Friday, looking to rustle up a win before returning to the Convocation Centre Gymnasium on Saturday at 8 p.m.
