The ACAC regular season schedule saw the Augustana men’s basketball team roll into Lloydminster on Friday night to take on the Lakeland College Rustlers. Both rosters offered a similar story line; relatively new faces led by a single fifth-year player and both teams struggling for a place in the ACAC post season dance. Augustana opened the game with an impressive offensive series that led to a quick lead and a chance to take control of the road matchup. The first quarter came to an end with the teams at a 24-24 stand-off. Inspired play by first-year forward Shayn Bruney (20 points and six rebounds) and second-year pivot man Joe Knight (24 points and six rebounds) paced the Augustana hoopsters all night. With just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Rustler lead was cut to four points and Augustana looked poised for a final game sealing run. Instead, it was an effort by the home squad that put the game out of reach. The Rustlers held a 102-87 victory when the dust settled.

After being bounced from Lloydminster like tumbleweed in the brisk prairie winds, the Augustana men’s team looked to even the score on their home floor on Saturday night. In front of a raucous home crowd, the Augustana men shot from the hip to match the Rustlers basket for basket in the early going. Lakeland took a hard-fought 48-40 lead into the halftime break as the home team searched for answers to the Rustlers’ renegade running style. With six minutes remaining, the Vikings cut the lead to one point and seemed ready to hog-tie a win in front of the home crowd. Unable to rustle up a win, the fans saw the visitors walk away with a 100-84 victory. After being severely out rebounded on Friday, the 46-40 margin on the glass was a great improvement. i.d. apparel player of the game Ryan Larsen had 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Joe Knight had a solid 10 point and 10 rebound night. Guard Kevin Barnes had 13 points along with four assists and swingman Mike McCorquindale had six rebounds and 11 points to aid the Augustana cause.
