This past Saturday and Sunday, the Vikings Biathlon team raced on home turf at the Camrose biathlon range, supported by an army of helpful volunteers.

The weather was unseasonably warm. The trails were groomed. The range was primed. Race bibs were sorted. The start line was painted. Ole Uffda, the wooden Camrose Ski Club mascot, stood smiling in the corner of the lodge and was made happy, perhaps, by the hurricane that was approaching. The hurricane that was the Augustana Vikings biathlon team!

This past Saturday and Sunday, the Vikings Biathlon team raced on home turf at the Camrose biathlon range, supported by an army of helpful volunteers and spectators. Many athletes stood out, skiing to podium finishes as they raced the technically advanced course.

In Saturday’s sprint race, Alicia Hurley placed second in the senior women’s category. Kathryn Stone placed third in the junior women’s category. Lauren Brookes and Jennifer Paterson placed second and third, respectively, in the youth women’s category. In Sunday’s mass start race, Alicia Hurley again won second place. Kathryn Stone skied to a second place victory. Jennifer Paterson executed another great performance and placed second, with Carly Shiell placing third.

Regardless of results, all the biathletes had excellent races, representing both the University and the biathlon team, and reaping the rewards of months on training.

The Viking biathlon team would like to send a shout out to all of the volunteers who were begged or coerced into coming this past weekend. With your help, the races were a success. Thank you!

The biathlon team is headed to Canmore this weekend for trials races. Many of the team members will be working to earn a spot on the Canadian team for the World Youth and Junior Championships, as well as a European tour
