It has been an interesting season with lack of snow, cold weather, and race cancellations. From January 2nd to 6th, Andrew Brisbin and Kieran Baird participated in the NorAm races in Silver Star and Canmore. Their best results were attained in the Free Sprints in Canmore. Andrew placed 10th and Kieran finished in 11th overall.
Jon and Kai Skinstad (who are competing in both cross-country and biathlon) had their best results of the season in Camrose last weekend. Jon was sixth and Kai was fourth in the Sprint race. In the Mass Start, Kai finished in fifth. Both Kai and Jon Skinstad travelled to Canmore this weekend to participate in the NorAm races.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Vikings Cross Country team was in action in Edmonton in the Alberta Cup #3. It was a beautiful weekend with excellent conditions and great competition.

The team had prepared well and the races were the first where everyone collectively competed. On Saturday, the team competed in the Classic 10 km race. In the Junior Men’s competition, Kieran Baird placed first and Andy Brisbin finished in second. The Senior Men’s category found Kyle Schrama placing 14th and Joel Gervais in 15th. Maja Zimmermann finished first in the Junior Women’s event. Although Maja has struggled with sickness in her first year at Augustana, she seems to be on the right path in the second term.

The second day of competition was a barn burner. Andy and Kieran fought it out for the entire 15 km race. Andy finished first with a margin of one-tenth of a second in the Junior Men’s category. Kieran placed a strong second. The winter should prove to be exciting for these two athletes. Kyle and Joel also switched places on Sunday, with Joel placing 13th and Kyle finishing in 14th spot. Joel was extremely pleased with his results, having a personal best.

The team will be competing in Camrose this weekend at the Ole Uffda Loppet (weather permitting). The snow is now disappearing with the warm temperatures, but we hope that the race will run.
