The Vikings traveled (safely) south of the border to play exhibition games in Montana during the Christmas break. The first game matched up the Vikings against a tough Carrol College team. With only eight players dressed, the Vikings were able to compete quite well for the first five minutes as the score was 10-8. However, Carrol College went on a 16 point run. Carrol player Elly Bruursema played an excellent game, going six for nine from the three-point line. The final score was 41 to 81 in favor of Carrol College.
The second game was against the home team Montana State University Northern. The game opened up with intense play from both sides. Due to strong rebounding, MSUN took the lead and expanded it throughout the game to win by a score of 99-48. Jamie Sparrow, Karla Binder, Jessie Hameister- Ries, Alison Lundall, Amy Tweedie, Avalon Greaves, Natasha Nagy and Danielle O’Neill all contributed good minutes in Montana.
On Friday night, the Vikings travelled to Edmonton to play against the MacEwan Griffins in their first ACAC game of 2009. Karla Binder stepped up her game on both ends of the court, earning player of the game honors. She also notched 20 points. Madelaine Merkel had a strong game for the Vikings, as she was the leading rebounder with six. Jamie Sparrow stepped up and played solid minutes in the point guard position. The final score was 86-76 for the Griffins.
On Saturday night MacEwan won the battle of the boards again, proving to be too much of a rebounding force for the Vikings. The Vikings improved defensively in game two. Avalon Greaves was ferocious on the glass, grabbing eight boards. The i.d. apparel player of the game was Alison Lundall with five steals, three assists, three rebounds, and 17 points. It was a close and exciting game; however the final score favored the Griffins 73-64.
