February 14th has another reason to be special. This year Charlie Killam’s Invitational Basketball Tournament falls on Valentine’s Day. On February 13th and 14th Charlie Killam, along with Augustana Althletics, has expanded their tournament this year to a 16 team tournament. Teams will travel from Drumheller, Leduc, Tofield, Rosalind and Daysland as well as involve the local teams from Our Lady of Mount Pleasant and Charlie Killam. The boy’s side of the draw is playing at Charlie Killam this year, while the girl’s side is playing at Augustana. This is the first year Augustana has partnered with Charlie Killam for a basketball tournament and both sides are excited.

There is also currently a mentoring program, involving Augustana student athletes partnering with Charlie Killam students, already under way. Both the tournament and the mentoring program provide a link between youth in our community and post secondary students, which hopefully will inspire positive focus on academics. One program being ran by this partnership, “Cooking up a Story”, is already underway. This program allows families to spend time together at the school while cooking and having the students provide entertainment for the parents. There are also “Girl Power” and “Guy Power” programs that promote a positive living while connecting with a mentor from Augustana.

Having a tournament of such magnitude this year is exciting and the community is encouraged to come out and support the event. This tournament will provide awards for the ‘Hustle’ Player of the Game as well as an All Star challenge on Saturday prior to the final gold medal games.
