The weekend was a free weekend for the cross country athletes. Some decided to do a Bow Corridor Regional Race in Canmore and others went to the Calforex Cup #4 in Grande Prairie.

In Canmore there were only open event classes. In the Open Men’s category, Andy Brisbin placed a strong 17th, Keiran Baird 19th, Kyle Schrama 21st, and Joel Gervais 22nd. Both Andy and Keiran improved considerably in regards to the time difference versus other senior men’s competitors. Kyle also showed positive trends. These student-athletes have had good training conditions and have been diligent in following their schedules. The results are mirroring their efforts. Maja Zimmermann finished in 11th place in a strong field of Open Women (which combined both senior and junior female racers).

Jon and Kai Skinstad raced biathlon in Grande Prairie in their quest to qualify for Nationals in both cross country and biathlon. Jon has shown improvement both physically and in the range, with a strong second place showing in the senior men’s 20 km field. It was a hard slog in the warm conditions.

On the second day of competition, Jon and Kai both had a good day on the range. Jon had an exciting battle with Tyson Smith to finish second. On this second day of competition, Kai finished third in the Junior Men’s category.

Congratulations to all! The next challenge is the Canadian Birkebeiner on Valentine’s Day.
