On Sunday, March 15, the Camrose & District Community Band, under the direction of Tom Spila, will perform a concert at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta in Camrose. The Band will perform a variety of selections, from standard concert band literature and marches to jazz and movie themes. As well, Stettler’s Rhonda Newton, soprano, and Millet-born Janet Scott Hoyt, piano, will be featured.
The Community Band is comprised of music enthusiasts and musicians from Camrose and area as well as a significant number of Augustana students. The concert, held in the Faith & Life Chapel, begins at 3:00 pm and there will be a silver collection at the door. Refreshments will be served after the concert.
An additional feature of this popular annual concert will be the presentation of the University of Alberta’s newest honour, the Augustana Fine Arts Achievement Award. In 2009, awards will be presented to Robert Bailey (Camrose), Hedy Klause (Wetaskiwin), Elaine Pitt (Stettler), and Tom Spila (Camrose). The award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Fine Arts and Fine Arts education.
Robert (Bob) Bailey is a native Camrosian whose excellence as a music educator with elementary and junior high students has laid the foundation for strong music programs at secondary and post-secondary levels in Alberta. Hedy Klause, raised on a farm near Gwynne, has won accolades for her outstanding skills as a piano teacher and her advocacy for piano teachers in rural Canada. Elaine Pitt, born in Scotland, is renowned for her enviable career as a vocal instructor and choral director, having many singers continue into performing and teaching careers. Tom Spila, the director of the Community Band, is a distinguished, award-winning music educator and musician whose choirs and bands have won top honours in the province and whose former music students have excelled at Augustana Campus and beyond.
