Augustana�s First Full Opera Performance – Dido and Aeneas

Directed by Kathleen Corcoran 

The Vocal Performance Degree Program in collaboration with the Augustana Choir will present Henry Purcell’s opera, Dido and Aeneas. Based on the mythical legend of Aeneas from Virgil’s Aeneid, this opera moves through a tragic relationship between the Trojan Aeneas and Dido, the Queen of Carthage.

Students from the vocal performance degree program at the U of A Augustana Campus will comprise the cast and they are supported by the Augustana Choir as chorus, as well as an ensemble of musicians from the Augustana faculty and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra conducted by Angela Schroeder.

The opera which lasts approximately one hour includes exquisite music, some dance, guitar solos wonderful ensemble moments, as well as one of the most unforgettable arias of all time – Dido’s Lament.

The singers, under the direction of Kathleen Corcoran, include Halley Bailey as Dido, Nicholas Sommer as Aeneas, Lesley Jensen as Belinda, Rebecca McIntosh as the Second Woman, Mairi Irene McCormack as The Second Witch and the Spirit, Mary Ault as the Sorceress and Katie Kerr as the First Witch and the Sailor.

Tickets are $15.00/$12.00 and are available at the door or in advance at the University Bookstore and Candler Art Gallery.
