The men’s team traveled to Vermilion over the weekend for the ACAC Curling Provincials. In their first game, the men’s team played first-ranked NAIT and lost a close game 3-5. Next they played Olds and won 7-0, stealing points on every end and leaving no shots for the Olds skip. After a long break, the men’s team played Lethbridge. It seemed as though the Vikings squad forgot how to curl against the Kodiaks, tragically losing 3-7. At the end of round robin play, the Vikings finished in third spot and battled Olds again in the bronze medal match. The men’s team won 6-2 by stealing points end after end. This win ensured Augustana a bronze medal. The squad had an opportunity to upgrade to a silver medal but lost the second/third place game against the gold medal NAIT team (2-7).
This is the second year in a row that the Augustana men’s team skipped by Kendall Warawa and Justin Patten (third) has been able to qualify for provincials and bring home a bronze medal. Kendall Warawa (skip), Justin Patten (third), Joel Craig (second), Chad Szott (lead, in place of Phil Eriksson), and coaches Doug Hardy and Melanie Morter are the proud owners of a bronze medal. Joel Craig also picked up the All Star/Sportsmanship award for the ACAC Men’s Second Position. Next year regional meets will be held in Edmonton and Grande Prairie, with Provincials here in Camrose.
Congratulations to the men’s team!!
