Wendell Berry’s best work, Standing by Words: Essays, deals with the importance of developing and maintaining local
and concrete language. His thinking on rural communities, agricultural practice, and local knowledge is all of a piece with
his concern for language and its capacity to illuminate the life of place.

David Ridley is a graduate of St Stephen’s College, Edmonton. He worked with CBC Radio Ideas to produce “The World of
Wendell Berry”. His particular interest is in the role of research and documentation in local and cultural communities. He has
worked in the museum and heritage field for several years.
