The men’s volleyball continued their dominance of the ACAL this past weekend by successfully defending their championship win from last season. The men started off their title defense by playing mixed lineups in a 3-0 victory over the Portage Voyageurs. With several starters dealing with nagging injuries, Coach Tom Tigchelaar received a great effort from his supporting cast. The men were forced to arrive at Ambrose early the next day to be present for the naming of the All Conference Squads. Josh Ryan, Steve Gross, and Jon McCorquindale were all named to the First Team.
After having to wait, with each medal match going the full five sets, the boys finally hit the court against their bitter rivals the Ambrose Lions who were supported by hundreds of screaming fans. The match looked like it might head down the same path that the previous contests did, as Ambrose won the first set 25-23. However, the night’s outcome was anything but, as the Vikings were able to shut out the crowd, with some help from the women’s team, and dominated the Lions for the remainder of the match, winning 25-18, 25-18, and 25-19. Bryn Petch, a glaring omission on the All Conference Teams, had a spectacular match for the Vikings as he pounded in several monstrous kills and, along with team captain Gross, managed to shut down league MVP Dan Prasad with ease. The win was the last for coach Tigchelaar in the ACAL after dominating the league for the past 14 years.
The men now turn their attention to Western Canadians in Saskatoon this weekend, as they hope to win for the third year in a row.
