This past Friday, October 29th, Augustana was host to The Kings University College Eagles for the third women’s basketball game of the season. The game started out at 6:00 p.m. with the tip off won by Viking’s forward, Amy Tweedie. The Vikings had a slow start in the first quarter being beat out by the Eagles 24-10. The first quarter’s problems came from a breakdown in defense and allowing the Eagles to have uncontested layups and shots inside the key. Our Vikings had good shot opportunities, however many of the attempts weren’t being finished.

The Vikings, however, started their comeback in the second quarter. They came out strong, tightening up their defense and showing more drive. There were less turnovers in the second quarter and the Vikings beat out the Eagles in steals 9 to 2. With their hard work, the Vikings increased their number of rebounds to match the Eagles, which was a mjor contribution to the swing of the game. It was this hard work that allowed the women’s team to outscore the Eagles in the second 18-12. Our Vikings had good momentum ending the first half with a score of 37-28 Eagles.

Led by Taryn Story and Keira Lyons, the Vikings had a great second half as they came back to within 3 points of the Eagles. Strong defence was brought to the court by all the
women, and in the second half more shots started to drop. Although the second half was dominated by the Vikings, the final score went to the Eagles 71-68. Players’ of the game went to Michelle Huber, of the Eagles, and to Taryn Story for our Vikings with 18 points and 6 rebounds.

The next Augustana Vikings Women’s basketball home game will be played on Thursday, November 4th at 6:00 pm against the Concordia Thunder
