Volleyball’s Coming out Party Cut Short by RDC

After struggling in their ACAC debut’s against Medicine Hat in late October, the Augustana Vikings men’s and women’s volleyball teams faced off against the perennial powerhouses Kings and Queens of Red Deer College in a home and away series this past weekend.
The matchup began Friday night at RDC, with the Queens cruising to a 3-0 sweep of the Vikings. Kelsey Richard earned Player of the Match honors, due in no small part to 3 blocks. In the second match, the men’s team managed to keep pace for most of the night, but were unable to maintain consistent execution in the middle of each set and had trouble containing RDC all star Taylor Hunt, resulting in a 3-0 loss, 1-25, 22-25, 1-25. Jake Ohe was named Player of the Match for Augustana.

On Saturday, Augustana hosted their first home ACAC matches to a sold out crowd. The women started the evening off with a much-improved effort against the Queens in which they played some fantastic defense, resulting in several long rallies. Ultimately, errors at the service and on serve receive cost them, as the much more experienced Queens took the bout from the Vikings 3 sets to one, 18-25, 25-19, 17-25, 11-25. Player of the Match went to Stacey Morris for her contirbutions at the net.
In the male contest, things didn’t go as well for Augustana. The Vikings struggled in their execution and could not slow down Hunt (14 kills on the night) and the rest of RDC’s offense as the visiting Kings took this one 16-25, 17-25, 19-25. Cole McCartney was named Player of the Match for the Vikings, totaling 7 kills and 1 block.

The home opener for Augustana volleyball proved two things for both teams. They are capable of competing in this powerful conference but have work to do before rising up the standings. The next action for the Vikings will be another home and away series this weekend against the Lakeland College Rustlers of Lloydminster. The first tilt will be at Lakeland on Friday the 12, with the women starting at 6:00 PM and the men following at 8:00. Both matches will be available live on Sports Canada TV, which can be found www.sportscanada.tv. On Saturday the 13, both teams will then host the Rustlers here at Augustana, with match times once again slated for 6:00 and 8:00 PM.
