ACAC announces Blaine Gusdal Men’s Hockey Coach of the Year and Four Augustana Athletes to All-Conference Teams

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Association (ACAC) is pleased to announce that Blaine Gusdal of the University of Alberta Augustana has been selected by his ACAC coaching peers as the 2010-2011 ACAC Men’s Hockey Coach of the year.

In his three seasons at the helm, the U of A Augustana alumnus has transformed the Vikings into a powerhouse in the Conference. In 2008-09, Gusdal’s first year, the team finished 8 and 17, followed by a remarkable 14-13-1 second season in which the Vikings made the playoffs. They won Round One but lost in the semi-final. Now, in his third season with the Vikings, he led the squad to 14-7-2-5 record. Three of the top four point-getters play for the Vikings, and the U of A Augustana power play leads the league at 29.8%.

Gusdal played for the Vikings from 1986-1990. He immediately joined the coaching ranks as GM and Coach in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. His teams were SJHL finalists in 1995 and 1997. In 1998, he coached the SJHL All-Star team to a Viking Cup Championship. In 2004, his team was the Allan Cup finalist, and then represented Canada at the Nagano Cup in 2005.

Blaine has worked hard to create a successful team culture and is committed to building an excellent student-athlete experience on campus. In fact, his team sports a 3.0 GPA on a very academically demanding campus. Blaine is married to wife Jane (Augustana ’90) and has 3 children; Connor, Kiel, and Kristi.

The ACAC has further recognized U of A Augustana Men’s Hockey by selecting several of our athletes for the 2010-11 All-Conference Men’s Hockey Teams. Torrie Dyck was selected as a Forward on Team #1, with Defenseman Brad Bourke and Forwards Scott Aucoin and Dan Hope selected for Team #2.
