On January 25 the Augustana Music Conservatory and the Battle River School District teamed up to present the first ever Klassics for Kids Koncert.
Over 700 schoolchildren, from Kindergarten to Grade 4, attended one of the two concerts featuring members of the Conservatory teaching staff. The concert was entitled "The Great Train Race" and began with a fun solo flute piece by Kathleen Schoen that imitated the polyphonic sounds of a train and its whistles. Woven through the concert was the story of Nathan the weary traveler trying to get back into Camrose, who is informed by the surly Agent Jon that he does not have enough musical experiences to enter.

Told through comic video presentations, Nathan returns after each number to tell agent Jon where he has been. The children were treated to a wide variety of music as well with a solo Bach violin by Thomas Schoen, the Rossini Cat duet by Michelle Kennedy Hawkins and Charlene Brown, Sesame Street Saxophone by Dennis Rusinak and a Brahms piece about a lady bug by Joy-Anne Murphy. In the end, Nathan finally experienced enough great musical places on the train to be allowed entrance into Camrose and Agent Jon looks for his next victim to educate.

After the concert, students were invited to draw a picture of something they heard and saw. Below are the winners of this picture contest. We congratulate them on their wonderful visual interpretations!
