Vikings hockey is is set to take on the Mount Royal Cougars Saturday, March 12 @ 7:30 at Encana for game four of the series. Series at 2-1 for MRU.

This past weekend the hockey Vikings finally took to the ice to kick off their semi-final playoff run versus the Mount Royal Cougars. Friday’s game in Calgary yielded the first game to Mount Royal with a score of 5-2. After a two-week hiatus in play the rust was now out of the system and the Vikings were keyed up to play on home ice Saturday night.

The Vikings took advantage of their first power-play opportunity on Saturday scoring early in the first period when Brent Ottman scored, assisted by Jeremy Beirnes. The Vikings would go on to score again in the first this time scored by Torrie Dyck, assisted by Brad Bourke and Scott Aucoin. The Vikings closed out the first period with two unanswered goals. 

The Mount Royal Cougars would get on the scoreboard in the second period but the Vikings would once again capitalize on a playoff opportunity when Liam Brennan scored, assisted by Ottman and Bourke. In the third period the Vikings got into penalty trouble with four players going to the box throughout the period allowing the Mount Royal Cougars to score on a power play half way through the third period. The Vikings were quick to answer with their final goal from Richard Dupre assisted by Joel Chisholm. Goaltender Paul Kolida had a very solid game fending off 31 shots.

The Vikings were able to take advantage of home ice and a great crowd to close out the game with a score of 4-2 to tie up the series 1-1 heading to Mount Royal for game three on Sunday.

Sunday’s game at Mount Royal started off quick with three goals in the first period two of which were scored on the power play. The Vikings would then go on to score only once more in the second period and end the game with a score of 7-4 for Mount Royal. Mount Royal will lead the series 2-1 going into game four on Saturday. The Vikings hope to capitalize on home ice advantage once again and force this semi-final playoff series into game five.   

The Vikings will play on home ice in the Encana Arena Saturday, March 12 at 7:30
