Augustana honours the memory of the Distinguished Alumnus Award winner, who passed on July 26, 2011.

Alver Person (September 25, 1924 – July 26, 2011) was a prominent member of the Camrose community, a successful businessman and staunch supporter of his alma mater: he graduated from Camrose Lutheran College – now the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus – and met his bride, Arlene Skaret, in 1953. Alver was recognized for his community and campus support with a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1994.

Alver was the youngest of five children born to John and Amanda in the East Hay Lakes district. He served overseas during World War II and was hospitalized for two years with tuberculosis when he returned. No longer able to work on the farm, he attended Camrose Lutheran College, and later became a funeral director. He was an active member of the Rotary Club, Canadian Bible Society, Salvation Army, Chamber of Commerce, Messiah Lutheran Church, Bethany Board, Camrose Scout movement and Camrose Ski Club – he competed in the Alberta Senior Winter Games as a cross-country skier.

Augustana offers Alver’s family our condolences over the loss of this great man.
