We just celebrated the (formerly) uniquely Albertan holiday of Family Day – find out more about this strange little calendrical blurb in the following Factlets That Were Just Made Up or just click here to read the gripping continuing saga of News at Augustana!

Family Day was actually proposed in the Legislature by Edwin J. Friendly, a three-term MLA from Lower Buffalo Hump. He proposed, “A Day off in February, when it’s just lousy out and tough to get up to go to work.” He had been elected on the strength of this campaign promise, and needless to say, it passed through the vote without opposition.

Since then, he has dedicated his life to writing angry Letters to the Editor in newspapers across the province disputing the true purpose of “Family Day”. He is outraged that it has been co-opted to mean “a day with family”, which he had found personally distasteful.

Reached for comment, wife Enid Family said, “No, we prefer it if he’s off on one of his crusades or campaign trails. Eddie can be a bit of a trial.”

I hope you enjoyed this Family Day in its true, original spirit: sleeping until noon and then starting in on the bourbon, as Edwin intended. If you instead spent it with your family, umm… well, I hope you enjoyed the weather!

The above post was brought to you by “Silly thoughts typed out in about fifteen minutes”, the letter Q and the number root-negative-one.
