Augustana alumna Andraea Sartison and student David Arial are bringing a new piece of theatre, Just One Spark, to the historic Bailey Theatre this March.

“Clumsy and goofy, slightly off-key and completely off-kilter, and yet somehow note-for-note precise, this unexpectedly clever musical-comedy romantic play generates all kinds of heat when it comes to love, lust and flat-out physical comedy.” (Winnipeg Free Press ’09)

Just One Spark is the story of two “star-crossed” lovers: Sparky, a fire fighter (David Arial) and Green, a chain-smoking librarian (Andraea Sartison). Drowning in loneliness and longing for the flame of romance to strike, Sparky and Green fantasize about love when they call in to their favourite radio station.

Sparks fly and hearts unite when he rescues her from a fire at the library. When her desperation to find him again turns to arson they aren’t so lucky in escaping the blaze this time…what follows is a love story taking place in their comatose fantasies. Everything is romantic, but as in dreams, quirky, spontaneous and unexplainable.

The escapade unfolds through mime, physical comedy and a combination of video and live performance. It is tuned to perfection by a radio DJ who sets the scene and underscores the story.

“We created this show while attending Augustana’s B.A. Theatre program,” says Sartison, “and enlisted our good friend Peter Reinhardt, from Vancouver, to work with us. The three of us wrote, funded, produced, composed, designed and performed it independently for the Winnipeg Fringe Festival in 2009.” Winnipeg holds the second-largest Fringe in North America, featuring over 90 different productions from all over the world, and Just One Spark show received one of the highest ratings. “The success was a great boost for us and our careers, and a wonderful learning experience. Since then, One Trunk Productions has gone on to create four more shows over the past three years.

“We are delighted to bring our first show back to our “hometown” audience at the beautiful Bailey Theatre,” she says. “We are working hard to add new elements such as video and new music, to our production to make it even better than before; but, the performance is only one small aspect of the show.”

Audiences looking for a reprieve from tired classics, an up close preview of Canada’s up and comers, and a night of good-old fashion entertainment, need not look any further than Just One Spark. Come and see what took the Winnipeg Fringe Festival by storm in 2009!

Just One Spark will be playing at the Bailey Theatre March 29th-31st and April 4th- 7th at 8:00 pm ($15 tickets, $12 students).
