Vikings win bid for Women’s Basketball Championship

The Vikings have successfully bid for the first ACAC Women’s Basketball Final 8 Championships: from Feb 28-Mar 3, 2013, Camrose will host some exceptional women’s athletics.
This new format will bring 8 highly skilled ACAC basketball teams to Camrose from February 28 – March 3, 2013 in the hopes of bringing home the ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship Banner and advancing to the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Since the 2009/2010 season, the Vikings women’s basketball team has consistently shown their ability to progress and compete in the tough playoff format which – in the past – could leave the teams traveling for extended periods of time and playing few or no home games. This past season, the women’s team played all their playoff games away from home and outside of the playoff atmosphere that the Augustana Campus and Camrose community help provide.
“Augustana is honoured to host the inaugural ACAC Women’s Basketball Tournament. We would like to set the bar high and provide a wonderful play-off experience for every team,” said Head Coach Leanne Shenton.
While Coach Shenton is excited about this tournament coming to Camrose, her athletes are ecstatic. “It will be an amazing opportunity to host the ACAC Championships next season!” said 4th-year player and Captain, Monique Jarrett. Monique was on the team back in 2010 when the women made their first playoff run in several years. “I’m really excited,” she said. “Back in 2010, I remember the crowd being amazing and really giving us a boost. The atmosphere and having our fans cheering us on will give us the spark to make a deep playoff run in 2013!”
Vikings Athletics and the Augustana Campus are excited to host an event of this magnitude. “After last season’s hockey success, this will allow us to continue to bring exciting, high-level sporting events to the Camrose community, and our Campus community,” said Vikings Event Coordinator, Alicia Hurley. “Our gymnasium’s reputation for being one of the most exciting places to play in the ACAC has grown over the last two years, and that has a lot to do with our fans and the atmosphere they bring to an event of this size.”
“Augustana is extremely pleased to host this event to showcase women’s athletics to the Camrose community. We are looking forward to a great tournament next year,” said Greg Ryan, Director of Athletics.
