The Women’s Basketball team opened up their pre-season with a win over the MacEwan Griffins 65-51 at home in front of a capacity crowd.

The Vikings took control of the game early, and never looked back. The Vikings led the Griffins for the full 40 minutes and played strong defense to keep the Griffins chasing them throughout the entire game. In a game that focused primarily on defense for both teams, saw a relatively low scoring first quarter with the Vikings leading 16-10 after the first ten minutes of play. The Vikings began their lead and take control of the game in the second quarter, outscoring the Griffins 11-4 to finish the first half leading by 17 points.

The Vikings stellar defense was on display as they forced turnovers throughout the entire second half, not allowing MacEwan to get open shots at the basket, running out the shot clock on the Griffins numerous times throughout the final twenty minutes of play. At the end of the third quarter the Vikings had a 50-33 lead over the vising MacEwan Griffins, going into the final quarter of play with a strong lead.

The Vikings maintained their lead finishing the game with a 65-51 victory to open up their pre-season action. The Vikings will face off against the Red Deer College Queens at the Ermineskin Junior Senior High School in Hobbema tonight.  The Vikings and Queens will play in a friendly match to help with community building in Hobbema and raise money for the Ermineskin Student Travel  Club. The women will take the court at 6pm.
