For the first time in 37 years, the Vikings Men’s Hockey team will raise a championship banner on October 10 at 7:30pm at the Encana Arena.

After an intense double overtime game last March, Vikings defeated the NAIT Ooks 3-2 to win their first ACAC Conference Championship since 1975. For only the second time in Vikings history, a Championship banner will be raised at tomorrow night’s regular season home opener against the Portage Voyageurs.

The 1974-1975 hockey team captured the first championship ever won by the men’s hockey program at Augustana. This team was recently inducted into the Vikings Wall of Fame on September 10. The 2011-2012 Augustana Vikings have now secured their monumental place in Vikings history and may one day find themselves joining the ’74-’75 team on the Wall of Fame.

To celebrate this prestigious moment in Vikings’ history, before tomorrow night’s game, we will honor this accomplishment with a special opening ceremony starting at 7:30pm. Though the players are the only names etched on the championship trophy, we at the Augustana Vikings recognize that the community played an integral part in supporting this team as they went on the win the championship. We invite all of the Vikings Nation to come to Encana Arena and take part in this piece of Camrose history. The community will be represented by the public servants in the RCMP, Camrose Police Services and the Camrose Fire Department.

The home opener is against the visiting Portage Voyageurs who the Vikings defeated twice in pre-season games 5-1 at home, September 14 and 5-2 the next night in Lac La Biche.
