Craig will be on campus to talk with students in several classes, address Media and Democracy in a public lecture, discuss careers in journalism over coffee and accept Augustana’s 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Craig WilsonAward-winning television producer, writer and editor Craig Wilson (’89) of CBS News in New York will visit the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus next week. Craig will first accept Augustana’s 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award at the Community Awards Banquet on Wednesday, February 27. The following day, he will talk with students in several classes, address Media and Democracy in a public lecture and then discuss careers in journalism over coffee.

Before moving to the United States, Craig attended Augustana University College in Camrose, Alberta where he studied Canadian History and Political Science. He began his television career in 1988 as a reporter for CHAT television and radio in his hometown of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Craig graduated from Columbia University with a BA in European History in 1995.

Craig has spent more than two decades in television news, most of it at CBS News in New York City. He currently is a writer and news editor for the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley, the CBS Evening News – Weekend Edition, and substitute writer for CBS News Sunday Morning.

Craig has covered most of the major news stories – both domestic and international – for the past twenty-years, including the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the September 11th attacks, American political conventions, Canadian and American national elections. He was awarded the 2003 Writer’s Guild of America Award for best news writing for his broadcast “Showdown with Saddam.” He was one of two nominees for the WGA honour in 2007 for his broadcast “The Battle for Iraq: Four Years After The Invasion.”

He is a Director of the Canadian Association of New York, helping raise funds to support charitable events in the New York City area, including the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research and Ice Hockey in Harlem. In addition, Craig has produced the video tributes shown at these events.

Craig is married to Mary Louise Weber, an Associate General Counsel at Verizon Communications. They have two children.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented to alumni in recognition of outstanding achievement in one’s vocation.

Media and Democracy in Action: Public Lecture
