Presenting a selection of masterworks from the Classical and Romantic eras, along with some rarely-heard gems of the duo repertoire, husband and wife team – Jamie Syer, pianist, and Laurie Syer, violist – will perform a recital on Friday, March 8th, at 8 pm in the Augustana Campus Faith & Life Centre Chapel.
The performance will feature works by David McIntyre, Reynaldo Hahn, Franz Haydn, Robert Schumann, Fritz Kreisler, and George Gershwin. Piano teachers and piano students in the area will also be treated to a piano masterclass by Jamie Syer the next morning (Saturday, March 9th), also in the Chapel, beginning at 9:30 am. Participants are the Bachelor of Music piano performance majors from the studio of Dr. Milton Schlosser. The public is welcome to this masterclass and there is no admission charged.
Now living in Alberta, Dr. Jamie Syer was Dean of the Victoria Conservatory of Music from 2010-2012, and formerly Head of the Keyboard Department there. He is the recipient of an Alberta Government Achievement Award, and winner of the national CBC Talent Competition.
Jamie completed his graduate degrees at the Yale University School of Music with Ward Davenny and Claude Frank. He has taught at Universities and Colleges in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and New Brunswick. Dr. Syer was the founding Artistic Director of the Victoria Conservatory’s Collegium Program for Young Musicians, which offers an enriched curriculum for talented young singers, pianists and instrumentalists. He has completed several concert tours in Europe, performing in Scotland, Ireland, Hungary, France, and England, and has performed closer to home in many recital venues across Canada. He is Artistic co-Director of the long-running Alberta summer music workshop “Strings & Keys”. Dr. Syer is known for his imaginative recital programming, and his artistic, energetic playing. He is a popular adjudicator and workshop clinician, who works frequently with teachers’ groups and with students of all ages.
Laurie Syer lives and teaches in the small community of Bergen, Alberta, where she has an enthusiastic class of violin and viola students. Her own teachers have included Dr. Lise Elson, Charles Treger and Syoko Aki. Laurie studied at the University of Calgary and the Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut. She has performed extensively as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player. Laurie is a founding member of the popular Calgary string quartet “Allegra” (celebrating its 30th anniversary this year), and was a member of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra for ten seasons. She has presented concerts at many locations in Canada and in Europe, including the Cambridge History Festival at Cambridge University, and Universities in Belfast, Glasgow, Dijon, and Debrecen, Hungary. Laurie directs several ensembles that she created in order to give her students an opportunity to make music together. She is the also the founder and Artistic co-Director of “Strings & Keys”.
