Pro Coro Canada, a professional chamber choir resident at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton, opens its 2013/14 season with a concert at the UofA’s Augustana Campus Faith and Life Chapel in Camrose on Friday, September 27, 2013, at 8:00 pm.

Pro Coro invites music lovers—as well as those who may have never attended a choral concert!—to experience this fantastic multicultural choral event. Featuring the Taiko duo Booming Tree (yes, you have seen them in the Travel Alberta commercials on TV) and music from around the world, the concert programme crafted by Pro Coro Canada’s Artistic Director Michael Zaugg is called A Time for Everything.

Taiko Drums and a Classical Chamber Choir?

Have you ever been to a concert where powerful and pulsing taiko drums have accompanied a classical chamber choir? Well, it does provoke the imagination doesn’t it?

Pro Coro Canada’s Artistic Director Michael Zaugg wondered about the effect that might be achieved by incorporating Japanese drumming into contemporary classical repertoire, and came up with this exciting idea.

He found works by well-known and innovative contemporary composers Veljo Tormis (Estonian), Eric Whitacre (American), and R. Murray Schafer (Canadian), then envisioned how the rhythms of the traditional Japanese drums might be incorporated to create an exciting and memorable sound experience for our audience. Michael contacted Greg Shimizu and Twilla McLeod of Booming Tree, Canada’s taiko duo, and put the project in motion.

A Time for Everything will also present the world premiere of Canadian composer Kristopher Fulton’s ‘The Twilight Cities’—based on a Belgian graphic novel.

Tickets will be available at the door ($25 regular, $20 students/seniors, $55 family).
