The students versus staff street hockey game has been an ongoing annual tradition.

It was held on campus for more than a decade, but moved last year to the Edgeworth Centre parking lot, where it evolved into a fundraiser for the entire community. Vikings goalie Joel Danyluk (3rd year BSc/BMgmt Sport Studies) was instrumental in rallying the masses to support both the student and staff teams. This year, it was held on December 4 but moved into the Augustana Gym because of -30 degree temperatures.

“It was a more entertaining game,” says Joel, “with the staff pulling out a 9 – 7 win in the last minute of the game!”

“As for comparisons to last year,” says Dean Allen Berger, “there was light – so our aging eyes could see the puck. Plus, the temperature was at least 40 degrees warmer.”

Besides participating in the game itself, students and staff stepped forward to help. The Augustana Students’ Association dedicated $500 for goal paraphernalia and posters for the game. Campus Rec set up the mini stadium for the event. Chaplaincy kicked off the event by singing the National Anthem. Brittany Catherine and the Augustana Jam Club entertained the crowd at half time. Tim Hortons provided free coffee, served by Residence Life staff.

“The part of the game I enjoyed watching the most,” says the Dean, “was Chris Zarski in goal. He made amazing saves and is the primary reason the faculty and staff emerged victorious.”

“I really enjoyed hearing the Augustana Jam Club playing throughout the game,” says Joel. “It was their first gig in front of people and they were fantastic!”

20131204_D110108Last year, we raised $2,500 for Dave Borman, owner of Hockey Plus and a huge supporter of athletics in Camrose, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This year, the aim was to double that amount. Funds raised will go to Camrose Kidsport, an organization that helps youth participate in sports. The money will subsidize the cost of equipment, transport, and travel for the Camrose sports teams. A number of anonymous donors have already come forward to pledge $2,000 and the event itself raised well over $1,000.

“Plus, we have a framed Oilers jersey – autographed by the entire team – that will be for auction at Vikings games,” says Joel. “All the proceeds from that will go to Kidsport. I’d just like to thank all the people who played in the game and the fans who came out to watch.”

“The fun was in the competition and camaraderie with students,” says the Dean, “all to benefit a community charity. Just one of many reasons to be proud of Augustana.”

The Students Vs. Staff hockey game is a perfect example of how Augustana hones in on its community aspect; it really is a tight-knit family here! We hope to see you out at the game next year!
