Still New: Musical Modernism & The Second Viennese School

17-21Mar - Revolutionary Music - Second Viennese SchoolAugustana Campus, March 17-21, 2014

The Second Viennese School is a group of revolutionary and radical early 20th Austrian composers consisting of Arnold Schoenberg and his students, Alban Berg and Anton Webern. Schoenberg, Berg and Webern number among the most influential and controversial composers of the past century; their powerfully expressionistic and profoundly dissonant music re-shaped the classical music landscape forever, and continues to both inspire and challenge audiences and musicians to this day.

The Second Viennese School is the subject of a series of free public events planned during the week of March 17-21 at Augustana Campus and presented in cooperation with the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies at the University of Alberta. These events include: a movie night, featuring a DVD performance of Alban Berg’s 1934 operatic masterpiece, Lulu, with an introductory lecture by musicologist Dr. Christina Gier; a mini- symposium on the history and legacy of Schoenberg and his followers, featuring a keynote talk by musicologist Dr. Achilles Ziakris; a concert of short, original musical compositions by Augustana students, written in the style of the Second Vienna School; and a lecture on Schoenberg’s songs given by Dr. Deen Larsen, director of the Franz Schubert Institute in Austria.

Dr. Larsen will also present a Vocal Masterclass featuring Augustana Bachelor of Music vocal majors from the studio of Prof. Kathleen Corcoran. The public is welcome to all events. Please contact the Music Office at Augustana (ph. 780-679-1532), or visit the Augustana website at http://www.augustana.ualberta.ca/
