It’s not often the Camrose and area residents have the opportunity to experience a concert featuring two high caliber piano artists performing music for two pianos, four hands. Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta presents Debra Bakland and Cheryl Cooney, pianists, in concert on Sunday, September 28th at 3:00 pm in the Faith & Life Chapel. Entitled Old, New, and Blue, the concert will feature compositions by Witold Lutoslawski, Johannes Brahms, Sergei Rachmaninov, Johann Sebastian Bach, Frederic Rzewski, and Cheryl Cooney herself. As an additional highlight, Bakland and Cooney will be joined by the Canadian University College Chamber Orchestra, director Cristian Neacsu, and mezzo-soprano Sharon Braun at special points in the program.
Debra Bakland left a thirty year teaching career in the Pacific Northwest (Walla Walla University, Washington) in 2007 and joined the music faculty of Canadian University College in Lacombe, Alberta where she teaches piano major students, piano pedagogy, music history, theory, form and analysis. She has presented numerous workshops and masterclasses and adjudicated extensively in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. Ms. Bakland holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Andrews University in Michigan, and a Master of Arts from Washington State University.
Cheryl Cooney is a pianist and composer who resides in Red Deer, Alberta. She has lived and studied in Canada, Austria, the U.S., and France. Her compositions have been performed in Canada, the U.S., South America, and Europe. She received a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance from the University of Alberta, the Advanced Diploma in piano chamber from the Mozarteum conservatory in Salzburg, Austria, the Master of Music degree in composition from the University of British Columbia, and the Ph.D. in composition from Michigan State University. Dr. Cooney has enjoyed a residency at the Leighton Artists’ Colony at the Banff Centre and a recording residency as well. Her compositions have been commissioned by the Red Deer Symphony, and Yamaha Canada, among others. She has recorded her works with orchestras in Kiev, Ukraine, and St. Petersburg, Russia and has several CDs to her credit.
