This course explores Vienna’s rich history, with a particular emphasis on its music. Registration deadline Dec 1!

Sound of music tourVienna, Austria was one of the last great imperial cities. The evidence of its grandeur persists to this day in its dazzling palaces, cathedrals and monuments.

Vienna’s main legacy, however, is musical. The city was home to some of the greatest musicians who ever lived, including Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, Mahler and many others.

The course “Music and Culture of Vienna” (AUIDS 286/386) explores the city’s rich cultural history, with a particular emphasis on its music: from the brilliant operas of Mozart to the brooding piano sonatas of Beethoven; from the jaunty waltzes of Johann Strauss to the radical modernist music of Arnold Schoenberg.

Students in the course will sample Viennese culture first hand, through a variety of guided excursions: concerts, art galleries, museums and historical sites, and day and overnight trips to important historical locations in Austria. The goal of the course is to understand why Vienna was considered Europe’s “musical city.”
