Vikings lead Saskatchewan Training Camp

The past two weeks have been busy ones for the Vikings Cross Country Running and Skiing teams. The Ski Team spent a three days in the Prince Albert National Park in Saskatchewan, running a training camp for young skiers aged 9-20 from September 26-28. Skill levels ranged from beginner to Junior National Team hopefuls. The camp involved hours of running, strength training, mental preparation discussion, roller skiing, and attempting to stay out of the way of the elk rut.
Meanwhile, the Cross Country Running team raced on the challenging Red Deer course at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Grand Prix #3. Crossing the line first for the Augustana Women after 5km was Leah Reid in 27th place at a time of 25:41. Reid was closely followed by teammate, Blaze Flewell, who finished a minute behind at 26:41 in 28th place. Finishing third for Augustana was Jennifer Dillon in 29th with a time of 27:22. The Men’s race was 8km and Jonathan Fuller finished first for Augustana placing very well in 12th with a time of 30:28. Second for the Augustana Men was Ryan O’Donaghue in 33rd with a time of 37:10 followed by Ryan Baier in 37th at 41:33.
This past Saturday, October 4, the Running Team was at the ACAC Grand Prix #4 hosted by SAIT at Coronation Park in Calgary, the host site of this year’s CCAA National Championships. Augustana runners were eager to race the course and see where they hope to be running again for Nationals in just a few short weeks. Augustana’s top three Women were Emily McIlroy in 12th with a time of 22:11, Anna Eriksson in 22nd at 24:17, and Brianna Schultz in 30th at 25:45. The top three Men were Hans Asfeldt in 4th with a time of 29:44, Joedy Dalke in 16th with a time of 32:02, and Jonathan Fuller followed close behind at 32:15 for 18th place.
Next weekend the Vikings are at home for the Thanksgiving weekend Grand Prix on Saturday, October 11. The Women race at Noon and the Men follow at 1:00 pm. Races are at the Stoney Creek Centre in the Stoney Creek Valley. Come cheer on your Augustana Vikings!
