Kicking off the season with a 4-3 win over Concordia in their home opener, the Men’s team kept themselves in the running for a playoff spot throughout the entire season.

As the Vikings entered the final weekend of the regular season, they found themselves sitting in fourth place, just two points out of a playoff spot, behind Concordia Thunder. The Vikings faced the Grande Prairie Wolves for their final two games at home. Saturday’s game was a tight match, and Grande Prairie came out on top, defeating the Vikings 4-3. As a result, both the Vikings and the Wolves were tied in the standings, each team sitting 2 points out of a playoff spot.

On Sunday, the Men’s team played their last home game of the season, where they needed a win in order to advance. The score remained in a 1-1 tie for most of the match. However, with 5 minutes remaining, Nazheef Gangji scored the game-winning goal that led the Vikings to a 2-1 victory over Grande Prairie, earning them a ticket to the Provincial Championships. The Vikings finished the regular season ranked 3rd in the North division with 4 wins, 5 losses, and 1 tie.

The Men’s soccer team will travel to the Provincial Championships this Thursday, which are hosted by Lakeland College. They face SAIT, the second-ranked team in the South, in the quarterfinals on Friday at 2pm. Semifinals will be held on Saturday, with the bronze and gold medal games held on Sunday.

Captain of the Men’s Soccer team, Dillon Lehman, is looking forward to the upcoming weekend: “It’s not often that first year teams make the ACAC playoffs, so it is very exciting to be a part of this team and to have the opportunity to represent Augustana at Provincials. I couldn’t be more proud of my teammates. We’ve come a long way since the beginning of the season, and we’re looking forward to this opportunity.”
