IMG_6121Augustana’s Biathletes are well on their way to starting the season. They have been training non-stop since the beginning of the semester and are ready to jump into the race season. Coach Lowell Niven has been working hard with to make sure they are performing at their best for the first race at the end of November, “I would love to have a very positive experience for all my athletes and to see them improve as the race season goes on.”

The new school year brought with it four brand new recruits. Ben Curry (Abbotsford, BC), Daniella Burke (Limoges, ON), Emile Vogel-Nakamura (Vancouver, BC), and Helaynea Moore (Medicine Hat, AB) have all joined the team this year. Each one of them adds a key component to the team dynamic. Their vibrant personalities and constant enthusiasm help to enhance the already positive atmosphere of the team. First year Augustana Biathlete, Ben Curry says, “training is hard, but it is really preparing me for our future competitions.” His teammates added, “Coach Lowell makes sure to keep things interesting by adding things like pumpkins into the shooting practice for a Halloween treat.” The Biathlon Team carved pumpkins in a unique way this year – with their rifles!

IMG_9171Augustana is home to the only University Biathlon team in Canada. Each of its members holds a unique background, and they come from all over the country for a common interest; the desire to participate in the sport while pursuing a post-secondary education. It is the hope of the Augustana Biathletes to bring more interest to the sport, and showcase that it is not only a fun and challenging sport to participate in, but it is also fun to watch! Augustana will be hosting the fifth Calforex Cup this year on January 31st and February 1st, 2015 at the Camrose Biathlon Range. In the meantime, pray for snow!
