Nostalgic about the old days of College hockey in Camrose? Experience ACAC action under the wooden roof of the Max McLean Arena!
Hockey Fans feeling nostalgic about the old days of College hockey in Camrose will have the perfect opportunity to experience ACAC action once again under the wooden roof of the Max McLean Arena. Due to preparations for the Canada Cup of Curling – the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regular season University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings home game versus Red Deer College will be played on the appropriately named #ThrowbackThursday, December 4 at 7:30 pm.
Organizers are taking advantage of this great opportunity to celebrate the Vikings’ hockey heritage. They are going the extra mile to bring back those sentimental fan feelings. Look forward to special guest, the Edmonton Oilers “Organ Guy”, Gord Graschuk – who will be entertaining the crowd on live organ between whistles. Former ‘Voice of the Vikings’, Dale Smith, freshly retired from a 47-year career with 790 CFCW will be back on the Max McLean mic – along with his son, current Vikings Announcer, Curtis Smith. Fans can join in the fun by dressing as their favourite hockey decade, or by wearing their old Camrose Lutheran College or Viking Cup jerseys to win prizes!
Vikings Head Coach, Blaine Gusdal, who played several years in the Max as a Viking himself is looking forward to the special venue. “It should be fun and entertaining to play in the Max again. Over the past few years, every once and awhile, we play a home game in the Max and we’ve had great success. The guys really seem to enjoy it and the atmosphere in the stands is always loud and upbeat. Playing the RDC Kings on Throwback Thursday will also be unique and it will certainly bring back memories for many long-time Vikings fans,” says Gusdal.
Says fifth-year Defensemen and Business Economics student, Brad Bourke, “I’ve played in the Max a few times in my career in both Junior and University. It was a tough place to play in as a visiting team in Junior! Since the Max also hosted the Viking Cup for decades – the rink definitely has a rich, historic atmosphere. It should be an exciting game and a great way to end the first part of the season!”
