Next weekend, Camrose hosts the 2015 ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship. With the league having gone back to a schedule separating the North and South teams for better travel, volleyball fans get to witness a crossover playoff structure for the first time since 2009. This prestigious tournament – the best conference championship in the country – takes place Feb.26-28 at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus.
Despite entering the ACAC only a few years ago, the Vikings have quickly become an elite team in the league, currently ranked as the ninth best team in the country. This year, the Vikings look to improve on the Bronze medal from last season by playing in the finals in front of the schools diehard fans. Joining the Vikings at the championship are seven other excellent teams, including the defending champs (and national 2 seed), Red Deer College.
The first major event for the weekend is the All-Conference Awards banquet on Wednesday, which recognizes the league’s best athletes and their accomplishments this season. This takes place at the Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre, which is a part of Augustana Campus. The dinner begins at 7:30 and officially marks the start of the tournament. The Augustana Gym is only 30 second walk out the Centre’s doors, inside the Faith and Life building, and that is where the rest of the tournament takes place. For the tournament, extra seating arrangements will allow more fans to enjoy the action, including on the stage area. There, fans over the age of 18 can enjoy the beer gardens, which serve a variety of brews.
Thursday, the action begins at 1 p.m. with the first Quarter-final matchup. The other first round matches follow at 3, 6 and 8, with the home team taking to the floor in the evening marquee. Friday, the consolation Semi’s take place at 1 and 3 in the afternoon, with Championship Semi-final matches going at 6 and 8 that evening. Finally, the tournament concludes Saturday, starting with a fifth place game at 2 p.m. The medal matches commence at 5 and 7:30, with medal presentations immediately after the championship match.
Tickets for the tournament are available online through the website http://www.acacmensvolleyball.ca/. A two-match pack is 15 dollars, but a tournament pass is available for 60, covering all matches until the medal round. Seniors, students and children have discounted rates.
