It’s an exciting time to be a Viking – and a Viking fan!
From “Vikings win ACAC Gold” by Jessica Ryan, Camrose Canadian
Buoyed by the roar of a home crowd 680 strong, the Augustana men’s volleyball team captured the ACAC championship trophy in a thrilling five set match Feb. 28.
The Vikings, ranked first in the north division of the ACAC after regular season play, started off the tournament with a decisive 3-0 win over the SAIT Trojans (not at their best without setter Nathan Goss who had sprained an ankle the day before).
The semi-final match-up against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers was closer, with the Rattlers taking the Vikings into extra points in the fourth set before the home team brought it to a 29-27 close, clinching a berth at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship with the win.
Vikings head coach Stephen Leggitt said the game plan going into the final against the south division leading Red Deer College Kings was not to panic and to take care of the Vikings’ side of the court.
The evening finished with the Tournament All-Stars and medals ceremony: RDC’s Luc Brisbane and Tim Finnigan and Augustana’s Cole McCartney and Thomas Regier joined Fraser Smith (MHC) and Sean Renaud and Bryce Cardinal (NAIT) as All-Stars. Augustana’s Luke Ryan took home the tournament’s Most Valuable Player honours. The 2015 Championship is the first in the men’s volleyball program’s history. All that remains is the CCAA National Championship in Prince Edward Island from March 11 to 14: follow the action online through SportsCanadaTV!
Sincere thanks to staff, student staff and volunteers, our talented coaches and players – plus all of the fans who came out to cheer on the Vikings!
On February 28, all three Vikings curling teams traveled to Grande Prairie for the ACAC Conference Championships. Both Women’s and Mixed teams fought to the gold medal finals, and the Men’s team competed in the bronze medal game.
Our Mixed team won GOLD – with a fantastic shot by skip Brandon Brown to score three points in the final end – against Olds College. The Women took home SILVER in an extremely close match against NAIT that came down to the final stone. The Men’s team fell short of the medals in an extra end loss to Olds College. Both Men’s and Women’s teams will compete in the CCAA national competition at the end of March, hosted by Olds College.
Augustana also had four student-athletes selected as All-Conference stars! Congratulations to Lynelle Mahe who won First Team All-Star women’s third, Second Team All-Star women’s lead Kristen Huber, Bailey Shandro named First Team All-Star mixed third, and First Team All-Star mixed skip Brandon Brown! Congratulations as well to Sarah Brown, who won the Chuck Morter award for exceptional involvement in the sport of curling and the community.
And a special congratulations to Augustana Vikings curling coach Roger Galenza for his award as ACAC curling COACH OF THE YEAR!
