On April 13 from 12 PM – 1 PM MST, the Battler River Alliance for Economic Development (BRAED) and Alberta Centre for Sustainable Rural Communities (ACSRC) will host their sixth installment in the free Webinars for Thought Series. This series is meant to cut across a number of topic areas that are relevant and current to organizations and businesses in East Central Alberta and beyond, providing a new knowledge base and foundation of resources that can be accessed to improve the capacity to maintain a thriving economic and community base. To register, visit this link. Please register by April 12, 2015.

We are pleased to have Derek Bruno as our sixth presenter. Derek Bruno can best be described as visionary in his ability to find opportunity when faced by challenge. It is this drive that has led him to establish a number of successful businesses, pursue his MBA in Community Economic Development and serve two terms as Councillor for Samson Cree Nation. He is currently President and CEO of Samson Oil and Gas Inc. (SOGI) where he has focused on creating strategic partnerships and joint ventures. This has resulted in significant benefits for both partners including sharing experience, skills, people, equipment and customer bases. Joint venture partnerships have enabled SOGI open new markets and improve services to existing ones. It has also opened the door for employment for community members. Above all, Derek has a passion for community. He provides mentorship to young entrepreneurs and has recently started providing environmental training through his management consulting company.

Strengthening First Nation Communities Through Entrepreneurialism and Leadership: A Story of Success

Derek will speak to the lessons he has learned in starting and growing his own businesses, and his experiences mentoring other hopeful entrepreneurs in his community. Derek believes entrepreneurship, and more broadly economic development,\ are the tools that will lead to strengthening of First Nation communities, as they take control of their economies and their futures. Mr. Bruno will also speak about his role in working with industry and his co-development of a strength based corporate engagement model. This model helps to facilitate a relational focused engagement and negotiation process leading to a more respectful, transparent and valued added outcome for First Nation communities and partner companies. The model is about “focusing on what is strong” as opposed to “what is wrong” resulting in mutual respect, pride and success in a collaborative process. Mr. Bruno will share some of the successes from his own community, including the Calgary Bridge Employment Project and Samson Works.
