Honorary Doctor of Science Degree Recipient, Russell Schnell:
Born in the community of Castor, U of A alumnus Russell Schnell has forged a distinguished global career as an atmospheric scientist. While at the Alberta Hail Studies program, he observed that certain bacteria on decaying leaves were probably a key factor in initiating rain, hail and snow—a discovery now being confirmed with recent advances in genetic techniques.
His research has since taken him to more than 70 countries, and he has published more than 120 papers on ice nuclei, ozone, Arctic air pollution, greenhouse gases, and methane leaks from oil and gas operations. A leader in establishing international networks for observing atmospheric composition, Schnell is currently deputy director of the Global Monitoring Division of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He has also served as a member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore in 2007.
